Montreals tired of delays in providing federal services

Global News reported a week ago about the recent suspension ofGuaranteed Income Subsidypayments to seniors.

Now more communities his workers are speaking out about delays and problems in other federal government departments, and some experts believe that some of the problems will be resolved. I think it may take some time.

Franz André, co-founder of the Refugee Assistance Group, Ordinator of the Comite d'action des Personnes sans status, has said since last fall that due to the amount of people arriving,

"We already had delays before we reopened borders," André explained.

He believes civil servants are struggling to keep up.

"There are more people [arriving] than there used to be," he noted.

He also believes that the application process for asylum seekers could be more efficient. Clients say they are also experiencing delays because they think they have a problem.

"They have a backlog, but they continue to receive more and more applications every day," he said.  "This is why Immigration should seriously consider hiring more people."

"I understand people's frustration, but we need to understand that we have only experienced a once-in-a-century pandemic," he stressed. Peter Greif, an associate professor of political science at Master University, agrees, but argues that some departments are poorly planned.

He believes some problems will be fixed soon, but others will not.

"The kind of backlog caused by the pandemic could continue for some time," he told Global News via Zoom. "What this means is that pre-pandemic treatment was fast, and now the lines are not three times longer."
