More B.C. Cherries headed for the Korean market

BC andcherries will soon start appearing on the Korean market thanks to an ongoing free trade agreement between the two countries.

It has been done for years to better position the British Columbia cherry harvest in trade agreements, according to a federal press release.

Under the Canada-South Korea Free Trade Agreement, which has been in effect since 2015, tariffs on Canadian cherries have been reduced from 24% to 4.8%, and will be completely eliminated by 2024. .

In 2021, South Korea imported more than $208 million worth of fresh cherries from around the world.

Canada's sweet cherry exports continue to grow each year, reaching $78 million in 2021.  In the agricultural trade, South Korea was her sixth largest export destination for Canadian agricultural and seafood products in 2021.
