Nonprofit Nations Skate Youth teaches Kahnawake youth to skateboard

For some indigenous people, theskateboard is a lifesaver.

And now, through non-profits, they are teaching Indigenous youth about sports and making them proud of their culture.

"Once children start doing it, they will learn their language and learn their traditions and culture," said Rosie Archie, co-founder of Nations. Said Skate Youth. “We remind them that they are future leaders, that they matter, and that they are loved.”

Since its founding in 2020, Nations Skate Youth has worked in 35 communities. We held a shop and stopped by Kahnawake on Thursday.

Sticking to one's culture is a skateboarding legend and co-founder of Nations Skate Youth. It is then that boarding school survivor Joe Buffalo believes he saved his life.

"Because I was part of a government agency designed to kill us...suicide is the only answer....that is the option given to us," said Buffalo. I was. "So we try to teach them, 'Look, skateboarding can make you feel really positive.'"

At workshops, nonprofit participants used skateboards that were distributed to them. I was able to take the board home.

Since the organization's launch in 2020, it has delivered over 700 skateboards.

“I think it's great that they bring that to each community. This is a great opportunity for all the children.

The goal is to show Indigenous youth that they can always be resilient in any situation.
