Smokey Lake, Alta. — One person died after police opened fire northeast of Edmonton.
The RCMP said a second person was also shot and taken to hospital in critical condition.
According to the cavalry, an officer of the St. Paul Detachment was searching Saddle Lake his Cree for his two suspects.
They say there was a standoff between the suspect and police and the shooting occurred in the nearby Smoky Lakes area.
No officers were injured.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, a state police oversight agency, is investigating.
