Nigeria, Abuja (AP) — The Secretary-General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries has died, Nigerian officials announced Wednesday.
A Nigerian oil ministry spokesman told The Associated Press. The reason for his death was not immediately apparent.

Nigeria's Balkind has led the crude oil block since August 2016 and has survived the most turbulent times, including during a pandemic when oil prices were hit by declining demand.
When he died, he ended his tenure at OPEC. Prior to leading the oil block, Balkind led the Nigerian oil company and was Deputy Managing Director of Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas, a joint venture between NNPC and multinational oil giant Shell, Total and Any.
