Our favourite things: Watching worries float away at Bota Bota

Several studies have proven the calming effects of spas in general — but did you know the sounds of a body of water can reduce stress, too?

This holiday season, consider giving a loved one a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Bota Bota, a spa in the Old Port of Montreal, offers just that.

Greater Montreal has its fair share of spas — each with variations of the same offers: massages and other treatments, hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas. So what sets Bota Bota apart?

It’s on a boat. Literally.

Once upon a time, the boat that is home to the spa was used as a ferry. Today, instead of transporting cars, it’s used as a vessel for mental and physical relaxation. Several studies have proven the calming effects of spas in general — but did you know just the sounds of a body of water can help reduce stress, too?

Docked on the eastern tip of a small stretch of land near the Old Port Locks, the boat is bordered by the St. Lawrence River on one side, and land on the other, where the spa stretches on.

It’s a magical experience, particularly in the wintertime, when you can sit beneath falling snow in the comfort of a hot tub.

If you’re stumped on what to get a loved one for the holidays this year — worried that a last-minute gadget or gizmo might end up in the donation pile anyway — consider gifting them a calming spa experience.

Bota Bota’s website includes suggestions on how to plan visits if you’re going solo, with a romantic partner, a group of friends, for a corporate event or if you’re a new mother. There are massage, treatment, water circuit and foodie packages, to name a few.

The common thread between them all? Relaxation. On a boat!
