A 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl from Guelph, Ontario committed a series of grandparent scams.

In one case, police say an 80-year-old Guelph woman received a call from someone claiming to be her own grandson.

The caller was reportedly arrested and charged with a large amount of marijuana and said she needed $10,000 as bail.

Arrangements were made for a suspected law enforcement officer to visit the victim's residence to collect the cash, police said, later that day.

2 In the second case, an elderly couple received a call indicating that their son had been arrested and bail was requested.

A female suspect who handed over $26,000 in total before realizing she was a fraud victim It states that the couple visited her three times.

The Guelph Police Service Fraud Unit worked with police services in other jurisdictions to identify the suspect.

The pair are also believed to be linked to a similar incident in the Waterloo area.
