The New England Patriots placed veteran cornerback Malcolm Butler on the season-ending injured reserve, the team announced Tuesday. He later returned to the Patriots in the offseason. Butler signed a two-year contract worth up to $9 million with the Pats in March.

After playing the first 4 of his seasons with the Patriots (2014-17) and the next 3 of his seasons with the Tennessee Titans (2018-20), Butler will play 3 in 2021. In May he signed a one-year, $3.25 million deal with the Cardinals in Arizona. He retired from his NFL in August for personal reasons, and the Cardinals released him from their reserve/retirement list.

Butler recorded 406 tackles, 17 interceptions and 5 forced fumbles in his 100 career games (84 starts) with the Patriots and Titans. He made his Pro Bowl appearance in 2015.
