The Pittsburgh Penguins promoted Todd Layden to associate head coach on Thursday, giving the former bench boss a two-year extension.

Reirden, 51, has been his assistant coach for the Penguins since 2020, overseeing the team's defensive group and his unit of power play. Under his guidance, the Penguins' goals average (2.71) ranked him fifth in the NHL in 2021-22.

"As part of his coaching staff, we appreciate Todd's knowledge, experience and passion for the game," said Mike Sullivan, his head coach. “He challenges us every day as a coach to get better and his relationship with the players is priceless. He deserves this promotion and we are thrilled for him.”

Reirden went 89-46-16 in two seasons as head coach of the Washington Capitals from 2018-2020. He took the Caps to the playoffs both seasons, going 5-10.
