Plante wants to address 'systemic cause' behind last week's triple murder

Montreal mayor compares apparently random shootings to Quebec City shootings, mental health issues appear to affect both said.

Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante said Wednesday that last week's He said he hoped the city would play its part in addressing the "systemic causes" behind the triple murder. Including mental health.

In a speech before the city's executive committee, Mr. Plante said the murder was caused by a sword attack in Quebec City and he He said it could be compared to an incident in which one person was killed and five injured.

"In both cases, we found that mental health was at the center of this madness and what caused this person to do such horrible things," Plante said.

"So when we talk about safe cities, we have to address all aspects: criminal groups, access to weapons, prevention," the mayor added.

Speaking to reporters outside City Hall on Wednesday, Alain Vaillantourt A member of the executive committee responsible for public safety, he tried to reassure Montreal citizens that the city was safe.

He also agreed with the mayor's message on mental health.

"I'm a social worker by profession. I've worked in the health sector for 23 years. There's a reason someone is so violent when Mayor Plante talks about systemic issues." Vaiyan Cool said.

"In this case, it is presumed that there is some kind of mental health problem," he added. "So we need to identify where we can improve the system so that things like this don't happen in the future. It's essential."
