Plastic Producers Ask Court to End Plans to Ban Single-Use Plastic Products by Federal Government

More than 20 plastic manufacturers are asking federal court to end Ottawa's plan to ban single-use plastic items such as straws, cutlery and takeout containers.

This is his second lawsuit filed in court by a coalition of plastic manufacturers calling themselves the Responsible Plastic Use Coalition.

The first lawsuit, filed in 2021, seeks to overturn the government's decision to designate plastics as "toxic" under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.

Environment Minister Stephen Guilbeau has used that designation to announce regulations banning the sale, importation and manufacture of six plastic products.

His second lawsuit, filed in mid-July, asked federal court to overturn the ban and bar the government from using the law to regulate single-use plastics, while to prevent the ban from being enforced.

Mr. Guilbeault says he is confident government regulations will support him and would rather work with the industry to improve recycling than fight it in court.
