People were also asked to call the police service immediately at 613-236-1222 if a bear is an imminent danger to safety.

On its website, the National Capital Commission suggests not feeding animals as well as avoiding attracting bears with the smell of food. It says people should never approach a bear and to keep a distance of at least 100 metres, or about 330 feet. People should leave any area where they see signs that bears are nearby, which could include scat/droppings, torn-up logs or overturned rocks. For those walking dogs, make sure they’re on a leash at all times.
