Porthope police arrest Toronto man for 'grandparent fraud'

A Toronto man has been arrested on charges of "grandparent fraud" in Port Hope, Ontario Port Hope. on thursday.

Porthope Police Department said a resident was contacted around 12:40 pm on Thursday by a man who identified himself as the duty lawyer. He informed the resident that her grandson was involved in a negligent car accident with a pregnant woman.

No one was injured, but the grandson was arrested, the caller said. Bail was reportedly set at $9,700 for him.

Police call The woman, who said she had a second voice and claimed to be the woman's grandson, was initially skeptical. The caller said his voice was different because of his illness.

According to police, the woman was convinced and went to the bank and in $100 increments she withdrew $9,700 . At about 2:45 p.m., a man claiming to be a bail bond arrived at his home, collected his money and left.

Later Thursday, the woman received another call from a man who told her she would have to pay another $10,000 to release her grandson as a guarantor.

The woman called Coburg's royal family to verify the identity of the caller, police said. She was told that the person did not exist and she was advised to call the police.

Police said the woman chose to contact her crook at her own discretion and that if her crook returned, she would call the police. .

At around 3:25 pm, a woman called her 911 and the same man returned to her home to collect her $10,000, she said.

Police arrived and arrested the suspect after a short chase.

In Toronto he was arrested by Tayjon Campbell. Pricing details have not yet been provided.
