Quebec election: Conservatives seek recount in Beauce-Nord riding

The hotly contested riding is one of several where the CAQ victory was less crushing than elsewhere.

The Quebec Conservative Party will call for a recount in a riding where its candidate lost by 202 votes.

Beauce-Nord CAQ candidate Luc Provençal received 14,590 votes, just 202 ballots ahead of Olivier Dumais of the Conservatives in a contest where voter turnout was 77 per cent.

The recount will be of vital importance for the provincial Conservatives, who garnered nearly 13 per cent of the popular vote but did not win any of the 125 seats in the National Assembly.

In neighbouring Beauce-Sud, the only other close race where the Conservatives came second, candidate Jonathan Poulin lost by 425 votes. On Tuesday, he announced he was conceding the election.

While the extent of the CAQ victory — winning 90 seats — is one of the most sweeping in decades, the Beauce ridings were not the only ones were the result was close.

In the Montreal riding of Verdun, Québec Solidaire candidate Alejandra Zaga Mendez beat Liberal incumbent Isabelle Melançon by 461 votes, while the riding of Fabre in Laval was won by the CAQ’s Alice Abou-Khalil by a margin of 302 votes over Liberal candidate Sonia Baudelot.

The Liberals announced Monday they would not seek a recount in either riding.

The Laval riding of Mille-Îles saw Liberal candidate Virginie Dufour beat the CAQ’s Julie Séide by 425 votes.
