Montreal — Quebec Public The health director recommends reducing arsenic emissions in northwestern Quebec cities to five times the provincial standard.

Dr Luc Boileau told reporters today that an average emission level of 15 nanograms of arsenic per cubic meter of air is a safe level for urban air quality. . It will "eventually" improve to meet state standards of 3 nanograms per cubic meter.

He said the new recommendations would reduce the risk of cancer in the area and protect fetuses and young children. The facility is currently allowed to release 100 nanograms of arsenic per cubic meter of air. This is 33 times the state standard.

The agreement is under review by the state government.

Boileau said it could take years for arsenic emissions from smelters to meet the new recommendations.
