Sale will undergo surgery on Monday and will be out of action for next spring training. We are ready to start.

"You couldn't make up for this," Red Sox chief baseball officer Chime Bloom said on Tuesday. I'm very glad it didn't get any worse, but it was a streak of bad luck for him, and apparently for us."

Sale's recent injury has raised questions about his future with the team once he is healthy. The 33-year-old has appeared in just his two games this season, pitching 5 2/3 innings. He broke his left pinky finger after being hit by a line drive on July 17 against the New York Yankees and had surgery the next day. His season start was delayed after he broke a rib while training on his own during the lockout.

"We need to send some people out to find and retrieve the person holding the Chris Sale voodoo doll," Bloom said.

Bloom said he rode his bike home from Saturday's pitching practice at his college in Boston near his home. He took out his bike again to have lunch and as he was going down a hill he hit something that threw him off the bike and caused what Blum called a "pretty rough spill". 57} Sale's still-healing left little finger was not damaged in the crash, Bloom said.

Sale said he has pitched 48 1/3 innings in the regular season and only 9 innings in the postseason since the end of 2019. He had a 3.16 ERA in nine games last year. He has only recorded 14 starts in the last three seasons, including three in the playoffs.

He is in his third year of his five-year $145 million contract.

Reds his Sox to his Worlds in 2021, where he finished within two wins of his series, partly thanks to injuries that reduced both his starting rotation and his regular lineup, AL. It is the lowest in the East. Boston went 54-56 Tuesday, with 4 and 1/2 games left from his final AL wildcard spot.

Bloom said he expected Sale to pitch again this season after recovering from a broken pinky finger.

He has spoken with Sale over the past few days and said he was still encouraged despite the "incredibly bizarre chain of events."

Bloom said the team will take all the missed time into account when planning Sale's 2023 season.

"We obviously need to do that. "If you want to play 162-plus, you have to build your team so that you have enough depth in your starting pitcher. It's been a big focus of the organization for the last few years, and of course we've tested it again this year.

, we're going to have a lot of starting pitching options for next year," Bloom continued. "Whether it's Chris or someone else, you know something is going to happen, so if you want to play in the postseason, you're going to need people stepping up during the season."
