Report: Chargers sign $76M extension to S Darwin James

The Los Angeles Chargers reportedly made Darwin James the highest-paid safety in NFL history on Wednesday.

James agreed to the terms of his four-year, $76.4 million contract extension. The deal includes a $42 million guarantee and $29 million in the first year, according to NFL Network.

James, a two-time Pro Bowl selection he has not practiced at his training camp while trying to secure a long-term contract. He was set to make his just over $9 million this season on his fifth-year option on his rookie contract.

The 26-year-old James has 257 tackles and 257 tackles in 36 career starts since being selected by the Chargers in the first round of the 2018 draft (his 17th overall pick). He has 5.5 sacks, five interceptions and three forced fumbles.
