Report: Earthquakes appoint Luti Gonzalez as next coach

The San Jose Earthquakes are planning to hire US men's national team assistant coach Ruti Gonzalez as the club's next head coach, MLSsoccer.com and The Athletic reported Tuesday.

Gonzalez was fired mid-season after he coached FC Dallas from 2019 until 2021. His team has been a regular for over two seasons and in his season he went 28-29-25.

Since then, he has been an assistant to Greg Barhalter's staff on the national team, and reportedly he was in Qatar in his November and December of this year. He will continue in that role until his Cup at the World Cup, before moving to San Jose.

Gonzalez also played briefly for the Earthquakes. They selected him sixth overall as an SMU forward in the 2002 MLS SuperDraft, but played just eight games as a rookie before being traded after the season. 11-9, 24 points) are 13th in the 14-team Western Conference, well out of the playoff race.
