Roads will be closed this weekend for a longboard event in Kelowna, British Columbia.

Knox Mountain Downhill takes place August 20-21 as longboarders race down the steep and winding Knox Mountain Drive.

Longboarding is similar to skateboarding, but as the name suggests, the board is much longer. Racers dress up in protective gear, including full-face helmets and gloves, leather suits or knee pads.

The race starts at 9am on Saturday and ends at 3pm on Sunday.

The city has said there will be road closures and parking restrictions throughout the weekend to accommodate the event.

The lower 1.5 km of Knox Mountain Drive from the base to the first lookout will be closed to vehicles beginning at 7:00 am on Saturday and will remain closed through the weekend.

However, the main parking lot at the base of Mount Knox will remain open to the public.

"During this time, pedestrians are permitted to enter the area to view the event from designated spectator areas," the city said.

"Hikers are also permitted to access area trails, including Apex Trails, when downhill trails are not being used by participants or shuttle vehicles."

According to the city, volunteers will be on site to ensure safe passage for pedestrians and hikers throughout the event area.
