MOSCOW — Russia's Foreign Ministry on Thursday rejected a proposal by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to demilitarize the area around the Russian-controlled Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine.

At a press conference, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ivan Nechaev said the proposal was "unacceptable."

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant was occupied by Russia in March, shortly after he ordered the sending of tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine in what Russia called a "special military operation." The facility remains close to the front lines and has been under repeated attacks in recent weeks, raising fears of a nuclear disaster.
