Saskatoon mother accused of fake death says she had 'no choice'

A Saskatoon mother accused of faking the deaths of herself and her son and illegally entering the United States defends her actions.

Dawnwalker, 48, and her 7-year-old son were found by US authorities in Oregon on August 5.

In a statement provided to his CTV News by attorney Eleanor Sunchild, Walker said: She said she took her son to America out of fear for her safety.

She "left Saskatoon because she was concerned for her own safety and that of her son," Walker said.

"I love my son very much. He is my only child and I would do anything for him."

Walker is currently being held in a US prison. , faces two counts of identity theft in connection with alleged illegal border crossings.

"I am returning to Canada to seek support in continuing my pursuit of justice for myself and my son," Walker said.

"When I return and tell more of my story, much more will be revealed."

July 24, Walker and his son's reported missing. Her truck and her belongings were found the next morning at the Saskatoon Chief's White Cap her park.

After the discovery, police and volunteers spent days investigating the park and the adjacent South Saskatchewan River, looking for any traces of Walker and her son.

Through financial records, Canadian and US investigators located Walker and her son at her Airbnb in Oregon City.

In addition to the U.S. charges, Saskatoon police charged Walker with kidnapping and public mischief in violation of a custody order.

At a news conference on Monday, SPS Deputy Chief Randy Houseman said Walker had previously been "investigated" into a domestic violence case.

"As a result of these investigations, no charges were filed," Houseman said.

According to US officials, Walker's son was reunited with her biological father over the weekend.

When asked about Walker's statement, he declined an interview request and said he was now concentrating on his son and family.

According to US court documents , Walker is "engaged in a lengthy custody battle" with his son's biological father.
