Mexico City — A gun battle in northern Mexico killed six police officers, surpassing the number of assailants, Nuevo Leon officials said Sunday.

According to the security department in Nuevo Leon, the attackers used high-quality guns and rode 10 armored trucks in an ambush at 3 am on Sunday.

"Sadly, six members of our unit died on duty," the ministry said in a statement, adding that police acted "heroically."

The ministry said four other policemen were injured and receiving medical treatment.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador struggled to inherit the country from high murder rates and curb the violence of established gangsters. The average annual number of murders will be the highest under any Mexican government since the beginning of modern records.

The recent killings of two Jesuit priests and tour guides in northern Coahuila have elicited criticism from Pope Francis, who lamented "too many killings in Mexico." (Report by Lizbeth Diaz, Written by Daina Beth Solomon, Edited by Mark Porter)
