Shortages of some children's pain relievers reported at two Ontario hospitals

Toronto — Two children's hospitals in Ontario say they are facing shortages of common pain relievers as supplies are disrupted in parts of the country.

The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and the CHEO in Ottawa are taking steps to maintain supplies of Liquid Tylenol and Advil for inpatients, and children He says he is helping find a solution for those who are discharged.

In a memorandum to caregivers earlier this week, SickKids said health care providers will provide prescriptions for acetaminophenin liquid form. It is known by the trade name Tylenol.

A Toronto Hospital spokeswoman said some retailers have stocks of these over-the-counter drugs, while other pharmacies only have large bottles that pharmacists need to dispense.

A CHEO spokesperson said in an email that hospitals are encouraging parents to ask about alternatives to heat and pain management.
