CAIRO (AP) — Sudan has accused neighboring Chad of a cross-border attack earlier this week that killed at least 18 nomads in the Darfur region of western Sudan, the top commander said.

Armed Chadian raiders invaded West Darfur state last Thursday, killing nomads who were staying in clearings near the border towns of Beir Saliba and Aldeiba, according to Sudan's Governing Sovereignty Council. attacked the group.

Aside from those killed, several nomads were also injured in the attack and their livestock were looted and taken to Chad, the council said Friday.

There was no immediate comment from Chad on this accusation.

Sudanese outlet Darfur 24 News reported that three Sudanese soldiers were injured in minor clashes between Chadians and Sudanese forces in the region on Friday.

Sudanese Senior General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, deputy chairman of the Sovereignty Council, visited Chad ahead of the attack and was scheduled to act as Chad's acting president and chairman of the Interim Military Council on Thursday. He had a meeting with Mahamat, who was Idris Debbie.

He then returned to Darfur, where he stayed for several weeks to ease the tribal tensions and violence that had rocked the troubled area in recent months.

Dagalo attended the funeral of a slain nomad on Friday and urged tribal leaders and residents of West Darfur to refrain. He met with local officials and tribal leaders to prevent further escalation.

Sudan called on Chad to find the attackers and return the looted livestock.
