Suspect charged in downtown Vancouver machete attack that injured four

A 48-year-old man was charged with a machete attack,four others were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Ibrahim Abdela Bakhit faces his one charge each of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes.

Bakhit was charged with setting fire to his suite at his boarding house near Granville Street and Smithe Street and stabbing four of his people inside the building.

Two people suffered "severe life-threatening injuries,"Vancouver Police said in his release Monday.

"When VPD officers arrived at the scene, they were confronted by a suspect still armed with a weapon," police said in a statement. "Police then opened fire and the suspect was injured."

Bakhit will be detained until his next court appearance.

In an interview on Sunday, one of his victims said he heard "pops and explosions" in the building he shared with the suspect on Saturday night.

"When I walked into the hallway, it smelled like gasoline," Cecil Cochrane told Global News on Sunday.

"When I was locking the door, I was hit in the head from behind and fell to one knee. He hit me again with his machete, and I grabbed it." We started fighting and rolling on the ground.”

Cochrane said the man tried to stab him in the throat. Keep your weapon away. Police arrived in the middle of the fight, he added.

"The police yelled at him to let go of the knife. He stood up and went to the police. When the police shot him twice..I ran into the office when the shots were fired."

after sustaining several cuts to the head, back and neck. He was wearing a neck brace and had at least 20 staples on the back of his head at the time of the interview.
