Miami (AP) — President of the Republic of Haiti in 2021 Jovenel Moise was assassinated, but was acquitted in federal court in Miami on Wednesday.

Businessman Rodolph Jarre has been charged with plotting murder and kidnapping outside the United States and providing material support to death. If convicted, Jaar faces a life imprisonment.

At a less than five-minute hearing in a federal court in downtown Miami, judge Chris M. McAliley accepted Jaar's plea and jury trial request.

Jaar, 49, attended the inquiry but did not speak. His lawyer, Frank Schwarz, demanded that the government present all the evidence it has.

A dual citizen of Haiti and Chile, a businessman looked serious but calm. His hair was pulled back with a small ponytail and he wore a beige prison uniform. He was handcuffed, had a bond on his ankle, and had a face mask covering his beard.

His plea was denounced by a squad of former Colombian soldiers, Haitian police officers, and others who went to the president's residence on July 7, 2021. It's been almost a year since I killed him.

The Miami case involves three foreign defendants: Jarre, former Senator John Joel Joseph, and former Colombian soldier Mario Palacios. Meanwhile, the Haitian government has arrested more than 40 people, including 18 former Colombian soldiers, on suspicion of being involved in the murder.

Jarre, who remains in a federal prison in South Florida, arrived in the United States in January after being detained in the Dominican Republic. According to US officials, he voluntarily agreed to be transferred to Miami to face prosecution.
