A friend, Jill Hanley, identified the swimmer as Stephen Brewer, a professor at Monterey Peninsula College who retired in his 60s. She suffered a broken femur, but she was awake and expected to recover, she told KION-TV.
A nearby swimmer and surfer towed an injured man to the beach on a surfboard, and other good Samaritans began first aid before being taken to the hospital by ambulance.
"I was nervous, I have to admit," rescuer Amy Johns told KNTV-TV. "At some point I was very nervous because I was swimming and kicking because I was away from the paddleboard and the surfer was pulling him and pushing him from behind."
Age of the attacking shark , Gender and type were not immediately known. Firefighters deployed drones to look for sharks, but they weren't immediately witnessed.
Police said the beach at Lovers Point at the southern tip of Monterey Bay would remain closed until Saturday.
Shark attacks in California are rare. However, on Christmas Eve last year, a shark attack in Morro Bay, central California, killed Thomas Butterfield, 42, of Sacramento.
Last year, it was the only unprovoked deadly shark attack in the United States.
