Nick Kyrgios continued his career-best run by defeating world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev at the Canadian Masters on Wednesday. The win stunned everyone but the Australians.

Kyrgios, charged with confidence after reaching the Wimbledon final and winning the tournament in Washington last week, has questions suggesting the win should mark some kind of career-high.

"You guys are acting like I never beat world number one," he told reporters in Montreal.

"I've done it. I've beaten Medvedev. I've beaten Roger (Federer), Novak (Djokovic), Rafa (Nadal).

" I didn't go out thinking he was the best in the world, we played against each other three times, he hit me once, I hit him twice.

"I executed well on the big points today. I feel more confident in my game and under pressure than ever before. That's all I've really done."

Medvedev joined three of the other top-five seeds who were eliminated in the second round on Wednesday to start the draw at the US Open warm-up.

His lack of points ranking at Wimbledon this year means Kyrgios is still ranked 37th in the world and unseeded in Montreal.

"It's just his one game in the scheme of things," he said of his 6-7 (2) 6-4 6-2 victory.

"This doesn't mean we're in the top 10. We've only got one game left, so we need to prepare for the next one."

Next faced compatriot Alex De Minaur in Thursday's round of 16, Kyrgios said he would rather keep going all out in the tune-up event than resting for Flushing Meadows.

"I think the best way to live my life is to try to get a little better every day," he said.

"I was able to go to the U.S. Open feeling fresh and playing somebody on a day that was too good. Then you'll regret not taking it all out of the Montreal tank in Cincinnati." (Reporting by Nick Mulvenney, Sydney; Editing by Peter Rutherford)
