Texans to start QB Davis Mills vs. Cowboys

Davis Mills returns to the starting role on Sunday when the Houston Texans visit the Dallas Cowboys.

Mills watched Kyle Allen start the past two games at quarterback. Allen had two touchdown passes, four interceptions and was sacked five times. The Texans (1-10-1) generated 29 total points in losses to the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins and enter Week 14 with a seven-game losing streak.

The time on the bench should have been beneficial to Mills, coach Lovie Smith said Wednesday.

“We expect the two weeks of watching from the sideline to help and there are so many other things we can do to help the QB position,” he said.

The Texans have eight total touchdowns in the past six games; Dallas (9-3) scored eight times (four rushing, three passing, one return) last week.

Allen threw a pick-6 and fumbled as two of his five turnovers in the past two games were turned into defensive touchdowns.

The Texans had the top waiver priority but did not claim Baker Mayfield on Tuesday. He was waived by the Carolina Panthers on Monday and claimed by the Los Angeles Rams, who placed Matthew Stafford on injured reserve with a spinal contusion.

Mills, 24, has 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this season. The former third-round pick was benched after Houston’s 23-10 loss to the Washington Commanders on Nov. 20.

In 23 career games, Mills has compiled 4,808 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
