ENCINAL, Texas (AP) — Four immigrants died on Thursday and three others were injured in a highway crash in Texas. The

crash occurred in Encinal, a small town that arrived in San Antonio after a tractor trailer carrying immigrants passed Monday.

On Thursday, a jeep carrying seven people was being tracked by a border patrol agent when colliding behind a tractor trailer on an interstate highway, said Lieutenant Chris Oliveres of the Texas Public Safety Agency. ..

The driver was hospitalized in a serious condition with two other people who were also injured, Oliveres said. He said it was the second deadly smuggling attempt in South Texas in 24 hours after the deaths of two immigrants in a car being tracked by authorities near the border city of La Joya. The

crash highlights how secret and dangerous attempts to bring immigrants to Texas continue after the most deadly smuggling incident in the United States.

Authorities said 53 people died behind a tractor trailer in San Antonio. Federal prosecutors have arrested four people, including a suspected driver who was scheduled to appear for the first time on Thursday.

The truck was packed with over 60 people. According to Francisco Garduno, director of the National Institute of Immigration, Mexico, the deaths included 27 from Mexico, 14 from Honduras, 7 from Guatemala and 2 from El Salvador.
