The 75 days from San Jean Baptiste's Day to Worker's Day are the days of the most deadly accidents on the state's highways.
The year of the Quebec highway has arrived,The head of the CAA-Quebec Foundationstates that 2022 is already "following the trend" of the previous year.
"We have already recorded five deaths in six days," Marco Harrison said Thursday. According to the Foundation, the 75 days between San Jean Baptiste's Day and Worker's Day are the days of the most deadly collisions on the state's highways.
According to the Société d'assurance Automotive du Québec (SAAQ), 92 deaths were recorded in 2021 during the two and a half months. That period is only one-fifth of the year, but more than a quarter of the 347 deaths recorded in 2021 were seen.
It's time to "more motorcycles, cyclists, and pedestrians on the street." Mario Vaillancourt, SAAQ spokesman, means more accidents as traffic increases.
Harrison said, "Unfortunately, sharing roads is difficult for some users to understand."
He said, "There is also an influx of visitors from outside (state), whether in another state or in the United States." This also means that "the number of RVs on the road will increase significantly." "RVs have become very popular in the two years of the pandemic," he added.
According to the CAA's annual survey of summer travel plans posted on June 1, almost half (45%) of Quebec expect to travel within Quebec. , 28% of people go to Canada or abroad. And 20 percent will be at home.
Harrison and Vilancourt agree that the main causes of the accident are driver distraction and overspeed.
"Most people are on vacation, so I don't think they need to drive faster or distract," Harrison said. "Suppose you're driving a 110 on a highway with a speed limit of 90 km / h. Beyond 20 km, it takes 2 minutes. Is it really worth it?"
Harrison He said travelers need to plan routes and use websites that can avoid traffic problems and road construction.
Meanwhile, SAAQ warns against tired driving and advises drivers to drive before they feel tired, not after they feel tired.
Vaillancourt states that the number of fatalities and accidents on the Quebec highway has declined over the last decade, but adds that "one death is too much." ..
In 2011, 479 people died on state roads. There are 132 more people than in 2021.
