It’s a good day for The Weeknd. The singer led nominations for the 52nd annual Juno Awards, with six nods.

The artist, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, is up for the fan choice trophy, as well as single of the year (Sacrifice) and both best album and best pop album for Dawn FM. He’s also in the running for artist and songwriter of the year.

Tesfaye now has a career total of 35 nominations and 17 wins going into the 2023 awards. His total equals The Tragically Hip victories, and he only trails Anne Murray, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion and the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal. Murray leads the group with 25 Juno Awards.

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced the nominations on Tuesday, with the ceremony set for March 13 in Edmonton. Pop-punk singer Avril Lavigne and pop artist Tate McRae are also front-runners — each has five nominations.

Lavigne and The Weeknd will vie for artist of the year along with Lauren Spencer-Smith, Michael Buble and Shawn Mendes. In the album of the year category, Love Sux (Lavigne), I Used to Think I Could Fly (McRae) and Dawn FM are up against Who Hurt You? (Ali Gatie) and Demons Protected by Angels (Nav).

Meanwhile, the group of the year category is stacked with Arcade Fire, Arkells, Billy Talent, Metric and The Reklaws. As for breakthrough artist, it’s down to Dax, Devon Cole, Preston Pablo, RealestK and RAave.

Juno organizers also announced three performers for the event. Four-time Juno winner Jessie Reyez, first-time Juno nominee Aysanabee and rock group Alexisonfire will all take the stage.

The Juno Awards will be broadcast from Rogers Place in Edmonton on CBC, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music, CBC Listen, and globally at CBCMusic.ca/junos and CBC Music’s Facebook, YouTube and Twitter pages. Actor Simu Liu, star of the Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will host for the second time.
