TIFF Elects Canadian Director Patricia Rozema as This Year's Platform Jury Chair

Canadian filmmaker Patricia Rozema has been named Jury Chair for this year's Competitive Platform Program at theToronto International Film Festival.

The director of "I've Heard the Mermaids Singing" leads her three-person committee to select the best film award winner, with a prize of $20,000.

Rozema also has Iram Haq, a Norwegian-Pakistani filmmaker who appeared at the festival with his 2017 film What Will People Say, and Best Original Screenplay for his 2020 film The Disciple. Award-winning Mumbai-based director Chaitanya Tamhane will participate. Venice Film Festival.

TIFF starts Sept. 8-18 in Toronto.

Introduced in 2015, this year's platform program line-up includes 10 of his films, including his two Canadian titles, 'Riceboy Sleeps' and 'Viking'.

Other titles in the competition are Emily Brontë biopics Emily, Carv?o, La Gravite

Past films screened in the program include Oscar Best Picture Award-winning Barry Jenkins' "Moonlight." Death of Stalin", "Jackie", "Sound of Metal".

Last year's Platform Award went to "Uni". This is the story of a teenage girl from Indonesia who decides to forge her own path instead of following the expectations of her community.
