Topsy Farms launches 'Adopt-a-Bee' fundraiser

Amherst Island farms have launched programs to help some of the most important creatures in nature survive and prosper.

Topsy Farms has launched an "Adopt-a-Bee" campaign. This allows the general public to sponsor bees with donations ranging from $ 5 to $ 100.

After a "catastrophic" winter, the farm is seeking help from the general public.

"I think we suffered a 90% loss," says Jacob Murray, co-owner of Topsy Farms. "It hurts, and that's what [our beekeeper] is doing right."

Severe winter causes include bad weather, violent mites and other environmental factors, Murray says. However, the farm is proud to provide bees with a safe haven. This includes exposing bees to many plants such as clovers, broad beans, crab apple trees, and cultivated gardens.

"What Topsy can do is provide a mixture of plant and flower biodiversity for bees to make honey. That's what we do. We collect pollen in the spring, summer, and fall, "says Murray.

Topsy Farms will continue to open the farm to visitors with funding from the adoption program. Visitors are welcome to stop by locals and travelers to see the worker bee farms.

“We create land as a way for people to come and visit and see the farms they actually work in,” Murray says. "This adoption program keeps that aspect open to everyone and we encourage everyone to stop by."
