OTTAWA — Finance Board Rejects Some Proposals Indigenous Officials We offer a "blanket waiver" of having to learn both of Canada's official languages.
A briefing note released to the Canadian Press under Federal Access to Information from last fall on exempt calls from some members of the Indigenous Commonwealth Employee Network. It indicates that high officials are deliberating.
Senior officials warned that some indigenous workers were "increased in tension" between indigenous languages and the official languages of French and English.
Possible solutions proposed in the memo include providing Indigenous language training to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous civil servants and having someone speak an Indigenous language.
In a statement, the Canadian Ministry of Finance Secretariat said it would work with partners to address the barriers civil servants face in advancing their careers. "But there is not one blanket exemption from the official language."
A spokesperson said the government would "never change the principle of bilingualism in public services."
