TTC riders, staff set on fire, stabbed and swarmed in wave of violence

Here’s a look at just some of the violence happening on the TTC:

– A horrific random attack saw 28-year-old Nyima Dolma set on fire on a TTC bus at Kipling Station on June 17, 2022. Dolma died from her injuries on July 5. Tenzin Norbu, 33, was later charged with one count of first-degree murder.

Vanessa Kurpiewska, 31, was killed and another woman was seriously injured when they were stabbed (a witness said with an ice pick) by a male stranger on a subway train at High Park Station on Dec. 8, 2022. Neng Jia Jin, 52, was charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.

– The TTC link is still to be determined but Toronto police have asked if there were any victims of random attacks on Line 1 by a group of teenage girls on Dec. 17, 2022, after 59-year-old Ken Lee, who was homeless, was stabbed and killed by eight girls — 13 to 16 years old — in a swarming attack early on Dec. 18, 2022. The girls have all been charged with second-degree murder.

Six people were randomly assaulted by a woman on the subway that eventually stopped at St. Clair Station on Dec. 19, 2022 with all injuries non-life-threatening. An off-duty officer detained the woman before police arrived. Amina Hassan, 31, was arrested and faces various charges.

– In what’s being called a hate-motivated attack at Bloor-Yonge station, a man wearing a religious head covering was assaulted and insulted by another man on Jan. 18, 2023.

– A 50-year-old man tried to push a victim on the subway tracks at Bloor-Yonge subway station on Jan. 20, 2023.

– A female TTC bus operator was waiting outside when she was shot in the face and torso with a BB gun in Toronto’s east end on Jan. 21, 2023 but no injuries were reported. The suspects fled in a car.

A woman tumbled down the stairs when she was mugged at the TTC’s Broadview Station on Jan. 23, 2023. McKinley Manalang, 44, is charged with robbery and other offences.

— Two TTC operators were assaulted in yet another swarming attack involving 10 to 15 youths on a Scarborough bus on Jan. 23, 2023, and four 13-year-old boys were later charged with assault.

– A 23-year-old woman was stabbed in the head and face by a female stranger on the Spadina streetcar on Jan. 24, 2023. Leah Valdez, 43, was charged with attempted murder and other offences.

– Two TTC workers were chased by a man with a syringe at Dundas station on Jan. 25, 2023. A suspect was arrested.

– A 16-year-old boy was stabbed in his torso and legs by a stranger — a man in his 20s — on a bus at Old Mill subway station on Jan. 25, 2023. The assailant fled the scene running east on Bloor St. W.

– Three teenage boys, aged 15 and 16, and a 15-year-old girl were arrested after a BB gun was fired at a woman passenger on a TTC subway train at York University station on Jan. 26, 2023.
