WASHINGTON — U.S. motor vehicle safety regulators have responded to a petition by General Motors and Ford Motors for the deployment of a limited number of self-driving vehicles that do not require human controls such as steering wheels or brake pedals. We plan to extend the deadline for submission of comments.

The U.S. Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced Thursday that it will extend the public comment period on automakers' petitions by 30 days after San Francisco and Oakland, Calif., transportation agencies and others called for more time. .

San Francisco said the petition raises "a number of complex technical and policy issues related to vehicle safety that require significant analysis."
