The head of Britain's GCHQ intelligence service said on Friday that Russia had failed to gain an edge over Ukraine in cyberspace in the nearly six months since its invasion of the country.
Intelligence chief Jeremy Fleming wrote in an editorial in The Economist https://econ.st/3T14lmf that both countries have used cyber capabilities in the war in Ukraine.
“So far Putin has completely lost the information war in Ukraine and in the West. What is unfolding should not be underestimated,” Fleming wrote. The country's use of offensive cyber tools is irresponsible and indiscriminate."
Fleming argued that Russia deployed Whispergate malware to subvert Ukrainian government systems. said to have been falsified.
He also said Russia had used the same strategy before in Syria and the Balkans, and said online disinformation was a key part of Russia's strategy. GCHQ was able to intercept and issue a warning in time, he said.
