Home plate referee Mike Muchlinski left the match on Sunday at the Yankee Stadium between the Houston Astros and the New York Yankees after removing the foul ball from the mask.
Behind the plate, he was replaced by crew chief Todd Tichener, who was on second base, and the game continued with three officials.
Houston designated hitter Michael Brantley fouled a fastball at 91 mph from left-handed Nester Cortez, and 45-year-old Muklinsky was hit on the second pitch of the game.
Muchlinski initially stayed in the game after being checked out by the Yankees trainer. He was also seen after two times before leaving the game after three tops.
When José Altuve hit a home run at the opening ceremony and Muklinsky was sent off, the Astros led 1-0.
