We gathered in Toronto to elect our next leader. It's been months since former President Jerry Diaz stepped down.

On Monday, the union's fourth constitutional convention will begin, with elections for Diaz's successor, incoming treasurer and regional directors throughout his week. .

Representatives also vote on key priorities and initiatives.

Earlier this year, Diaz was indicted for violating the ethical code of the union constitution and democratic practices.

Diaz has long been the face of Unifor.

He has led the union since his 2013, 2016 and he was re-elected in 2019.

He had a reputation for being foul-mouthed and silly, inspiring everyone from top corporations to politicians to take action. He was in the best interests of the workers and was a key figure during the negotiations of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. He also successfully persuaded General Motors Canada to reopen its plant in Oshawa, Ontario, investing up to $1.3 billion and hiring up to 1,700 workers after planning to close the plant.

Unifor has over 315,000 members.
