Unifor members elect new national president this week in Toronto

TORONTO — Members of Unifor from across Canada will meet in Toronto this week to elect the union's next leader. It's been months since former President Jerry Diaz stepped down.

On Monday, the union's Fourth Constituent Assembly will begin, with elections for Diaz's successor, next Treasurer, and Regional Directors throughout his week.

Delegates also vote on key priorities and initiatives.

This Year Diaz was initially charged with violating the union charter's code of ethics and democratic practices.

Diaz has been the face of Unifor for a long time.

He led the union from his 2013 and 2016 and he was re-elected in 2019.

Known for being harsh-tongued and silly , known for his willingness to urge everyone from leading corporations to politicians to act in the best interests of workers, was a key figure during negotiations of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

He also announced that General Motors will employ up to 1,700 workers after Canada plans to reopen its plant in Oshawa, Ontario, investing up to $1.3 billion and closing the facility. We succeeded in doing so.

Unifor has over 315,000 members.
