The Ontario Provincial Police are looking for help from the public after one of their officers was airlifted to hospital following an incident Sunday morning.

Police said a suspected stolen pickup truck struck a police cruiser during a traffic stop just before 9 a.m. on Highway 401 at the Lancaster, Ont., eastbound exit off-ramp. The OPP said the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry detachment is investigating the incident.

The officer had attempted to stop the driver of the truck, who then rammed into the police vehicle, causing it to roll off the road and into the culvert, police said.

The officer was taken to an Ottawa hospital via Ornge air ambulance with serious but not life-threatening injuries, the OPP said.

On Sunday night, the OPP said they were seeking assistance in finding the driver of a newer grey Hyundai Elantra with Quebec plates that was in the area when the truck hit the cruiser and left the scene.

Two stolen pickup trucks — both believed to be connected to the investigation — were found abandoned, police said.

The Highway 401 on and off ramps eastbound at Lancaster were both closed for the investigation. There was also a partial lane closure impacting the right-lane eastbound.

OPP technical collision investigators, a reconstructionist, forensic identification services and aviation services were assisting in the investigation.

Anyone with information on the incident was asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) and might be eligible to receive a cash reward.
