After deciding to cancel the 2023 Vancouver International Folk Music Festival due to rising costs, a motion to vote on whether or not to dissolve the Vancouver Folk Music Festival Society has been withdrawn.

The decision came after a virtual town hall meeting drew nearly 300 participants who wanted the VFMFS board to rescind the motion. In a communication forwarded to media, board president Mark Zuberbuhler said the festival needs help, so the response was encouraging:

“The public said they want to us to try to find a way to keep the folk festival going. We listened. The Vancouver Folk Music Festival has long been, and is currently, in a financially dire condition. Our main goal as the board has always been to see a strong, sustainable festival. Because of the strong support that has come from the community and our partners, we now see the possibility of building that festival.”

Those in the community who want to provide ideas and suggestions can do so using the Thought Exchange tool on the festival website. A fundraising and volunteer drive is launching to get to work on saving the festival in future.
