The 38th Vancouver International Jazz Festival will take place this summer as usual.

In an announcement released from festival producers Coastal Jazz & Blues Society, director Nina Horvath noted the significant challenges facing major cultural events in 2023. The jazz fest is no different.

“Like other festivals and event producers, we’ve been hit by no end of challenges since the start of the pandemic including rising site infrastructure and artist touring costs, as well as our title sponsor relationship coming to a close at the end of the 2022 Festival due to changing priorities. As a result, Coastal Jazz has had to make some difficult choices that are necessary as we look toward the long-term sustainability of the organization.”

While the event will still kickoff with the Downtown Jazz free weekend performances at the Vancouver Art Gallery and šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square, the extremely popular closing weekend events at David Lam Park will not take place. The jazz festival hopes to be able to bring back the closing weekend in the future, but without a major title sponsor the cost was prohibitive.

Also changing is the venue for the Innovation Series, which moves from the Ironworks and Roundhouse Community Centre to the Revue Stage at Granville Island. Expect to hear more details moving forward.
