Vernon, BC Physician Identified as Drowning Victim

The Vernon man who drowned trying to save a child from the raging currents of the Thompson River has been identified as Dr. Michael Mutandazo.

His professional kindness and compassion was remembered online by his friends and colleagues. Mutandazo was participating in a recreational soccer tournament where he went swimming with his son on July 30th.

} says. Although he was able to pull his son out of the water, he was unable to escape on his own.

Mutandazo moved to Vernon in January 2021 to take over the practice of Dr. Fred Dyke. His fundraising shows that he is the only source of income and does not have a large local family, so his wife Julia and his two young sons need a lot of support from the community. and

Shortly after, the RCMP said police had deployed aircraft, boats and drones in the area to search for the man, but had yet to find him. said it was not.

The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team is also assisting with the investigation.
