School districts are safe this year, according to the Ottawa Safety Council (OSC).

He said the OSC, a non-profit organization that employs crossing guards in the city, said in a media statement Monday that he was interested in becoming a crossing guard. He said he was looking for workers. Respond to labor shortages.

“We are inviting individuals interested in making a difference in our communities to join our team. It's full of dedicated people who are passionate about," said OSC Executive Director Jamie Kwong.

OSC's crossing guards receive competitive wages and "various perks and bonus opportunities," Kwong added.

OSC seeks workers to participate in the Adult Crossing Security Program, a partnership between the organization and the City of Ottawa, to place crossing guards at intersections in the capital's more than 260 school zones. It's a schedule.

Kwong said in an email that the OSC typically employs 70 guards at this time. So far, the organization has only about 30 people. They want to find another 40 or he wants to find 50. “Ideally, we would like to employ close to 100 guards to provide sufficient coverage throughout the school year,” he said.

According to Kwon, salaries for crossing guards start at $17 an hour but increase over time, with emergency "on-call" guards earning more than $30 an hour. They typically work 8-12 hours a week.

Crossing guards are an important part of the community, according to the OSC. Each year, we help nearly 4 million children cross safely near their school, reducing the chance of road deaths.

Between 2016 and 2020, 27 people were killed in traffic accidents involving pedestrians in Ottawa, according to the City of Ottawa's annual road safety report.

The OSC blamed the pandemic, the outflow of workers from service industries, and rising costs of living for staffing problems. Kwong said hiring workers has been difficult in the past few years, but this year is proving to be very difficult.

Crossing guards work part-time to guide children safely across the streets near schools, usually before morning school begins and after afternoon school ends. .

The OSC cited the testimony of his two Ottawa crossing guards in a media release. A crossing guard since 2019, Scout said, "It's a great job for someone who wants to work independently, meet the public, and help children cross safely. He's also studying at a university. It's a good job for the students, too."

Eleanor, who has also been a crossing guard since 2019, said, "A random driver opened the window and said thank you for keeping the children safe at a traffic light." Like I said, nothing makes a day better."

The OSC has directed interested applicants to the website at www.crossing-guard.ca.
