Batten down the hatches — a special weather statement is in effect for strong winds expected Saturday morning through afternoon with the passage of a cold front.
Environment and Climate Change Canada said Friday that hazards may include south or southwest winds with gusts up to 70 km/h ahead of the cold front and west or northwest winds with gusts up to 80 km/h along and behind the front.

There was at least one scheduled public event that was postponed because of the extreme weather advisory. The City of Ottawa announced that the Mayor’s Christmas Celebration at city hall, scheduled for Saturday afternoon, had been delayed until Saturday, Dec. 10.
As of Friday morning, the cold front was expected to reach the Toronto area Saturday morning and the Ottawa area near noon on Saturday.
That could mean power outages, damage to buildings like roof shingles and windows, and broken tree branches, the weather agency warned. Any loose object could go flying.
The forecast also included a 40-per-cent chance of showers continuing on Saturday, starting in the morning and ending late in the afternoon.
The forecast high is projected to be 8C, but then the temperature is predicted to plunge to -6 C with a 40-per-cent chance of flurries Saturday night.
For both Sunday and Monday, the forecast is mixed skies with highs of 2 C. Expected lows are -5 C Sunday night with a 30 per cent chance of flurries and -4 C Monday night.
“Normals” for early December are highs of -1 C and lows of -8 C.
