Buying West: St. Brigid's — No More Confusion Needed at ByWard Market

What the citizens of Lower Town want is to heal, rebuild, and reconnect.

St. Brigid's Church property in Lower Town was sold , I was worried that the building would become a condominium. Little did I know that a worse outcome was imminent.

The announcement that "The United People of Canada" had purchased the building for her $5.95 million pissed me off. This takeover group is a dangerous reactionary group, some of whose members have joined the "freedom convoy" protests, took our city hostage last winter, and continues to harass residents in weekend convoys. It is a concern for all Ottawa residents who care about their neighbors and our city as a whole.

ByWard Market, the area where the St. is home to many of Ottawa's most vulnerable residents. Despite having lower unemployment than the rest of the city, residents of this community experience disproportionate levels of poverty, with poverty rates for children under 14 nearly double the city average. . During the occupation this winter, Byward Market was also the scene of many incidents of harassment and violence by some motorcade participants. Some people involved in this property acquisition share ideas and ideologies with those involved in the events that led to the harassment of marginalized Ottawa residents, including those who live in the market. want to spend millions of dollars to buy their way into the community.

Such rights as took over our city and harassed its inhabitants for 26 days. The kind of rights that defiled monuments and cost Ottawa businesses millions of dollars. The right to create a “Disneyland” in an area with more than 5,000 residents.

No more confusion. We need the right to heal, rebuild and reconnect.

It's time to call this acquisition what it is. And it certainly isn't love.
