WINNIPEG — Winnipeg Jets made it official and hired Rick Bowness as the head coach.

Bowness, 67, has spent most of the last three NHL seasons teaching Dallas Stars.

He led them to the 2020 Stanley Cup final in Edmonton's playoff bubble, where the star lost to Tampa Bay Lightning.

Star lost to Calgary in Game 7 overtime in the first round of this year's playoff.

Bowness hasn't signed a deal after this season, but has left Stars and said, "It gives the organization the opportunity to pursue another direction in its head coaching position."

Stars hired Pete DeBois last month to replace Bowness.

Bowness began his coaching career at Jets and culminated in 28 games running on the bench to end the 1988-89 season.

The former right wing finished his NHL play career with Winipeg in the 1982 playoff.

Daybrowley ended last season as Interim Head Coach for Winipeg after current Florida coach Paul Maurice resigned in December.
