Winter weather advisory in effect for Ottawa Sunday

Well, the weather office issued a new heads-up for a “slow storm” expected to hit the capital later Saturday and to hang around through Sunday.

A “winter weather statement” from Environment Canada advised that an expected 10 centimetres of snow beginning near midnight Saturday and extending into Sunday evening.

“A long duration snowfall is expected due to a low pressure system tracking south of the area,” the agency said.

“If forecast snowfall amounts meet or exceed 15 cm in 12 hours, then a snowfall warning may be required.”

The low temperature overnight was forecast to be -7 C.

Sunday’s temperature was expected to remain steady at about -4 C.

The City of Ottawa announced that an overnight winter weather parking ban would be in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Monday. These hours might be extended if more time is needed for the cleanup, the city said in its advisory on Saturday. Motorists can instead make use of select OC Transpo park and rides, some recreation centre parking lots and city parking garages.

There’s a 40 per cent chance of flurries on Monday, with a forecast high of about -10 C and a low of -18 C.

Tuesday is expected to begin with sunshine, but continued chilly temperatures.
